Olympic Studios, London, 2008. U2 are the final artists in Studio 1 before Olympic Studios close.

But the very next day the staff of Olympic Studios made their own recording. It was the final recording made at this great old studio and its rather wonderful. We doff our hats to them.

….and this shows the very first recording at Olympic Studios in 1966 (at 4.45):

  1. Great footage of the Swingle Singers cutting “Badinerie” in Olympic, live to four-track, although obviously the finished audio has been overdubbed later. The unique angled control desk shown in the film was custom-built by hand for the studio.

BTW this clip is from “Look At Life” a series of factual shorts produced for cinema viewing as part of the “full supporting programme” of short films accompanying the main feature film, as was in vogue at the time.

  2. Ahh, now, this is very good indeed. As part of my degree I’m researching a recording made at Olympic in the mid 60′s. The Pathe film has some answers. Ampex 4 track and 2 track machines. AKG mics. Fantastic!

  3. Magic, magic stuff. Very appropriate lyric for me this morning. Love the old stuff too. I wanna be able to scat like that.

  4. The vigarating Swingle Singers cutting “Badinerie” at Olympic Studios, live to four-track and recorded by dear Keith Grant who passed away 18th June 2012.
